Commissioners To Decide Whether Or Not To Fight Mandated Bay Cleanup Costs

The Allegany County Commissioners on Thursday will decide whether or not to join other counties in the state in attempting to fight mandated bay cleanup costs being forced upon them by the state.  Lawyers who already represent Dorchester County made a presentation last month on issues related to the Chesapeake Bay, including a direct challenge to the state’s plan for bay clean up. Members of Funk & Bolton offered the presentation on environmental policy and regulation issues, and take a very different view of bay cleanup efforts than does Governor Martin O’Malley. Charles MacLeod told the commissioners that the firm’s aim is not to engage in litigation versus the state, but to advocate and “shift the debate” to address the real issues facing the bay and, in the process, help out rural counties start “pushing back.”  County Administrator David Eberly told the commissioners that official correspondence has been received asking Allegany County to join the effort…
