Committee Hears Testimony on House Bill 335

February 20th, 2012 by WCBC Radio

The Maryland House Ways and Means Committee last Thursday heard testimony on House Bill 335. That bill, introduced by Delegate Leroy Myers would allow children in Maryland to attend public school in an adjoining county if they live more than 30 miles away from the closest school in their home county.  The Allegany County school board, facing $5.3 million in state budget cuts, voted last June to phase out the Washington County School Choice program, which allowed about 40 children in Little Orleans to attend school in Hancock. Parents and the Allegany County commissioners objected to the decision, which ultimately ended up in a lawsuit that was unsuccessful. Myers said he walked away from the hearing confident the bill will pass. He also said its unfortunate the the local school board was not more receptive to maintaining the program.
