The House Judiciary Committee recently held a lengthy hearing on several bills aimed at law enforcement accountability. Members of the Maryland Coalition for Justice and Equality spoke in support of a trio of bills aimed at addressing the tension between police and the public. One bill would address how and where officers could use body cameras, while another bill on the docket would require local law enforcement to provide an annual report for officer-involved deaths and deaths in the line of duty. Also up for consideration is a bill that would address the process for making a complaint against a police officer and how investigations into police misconduct are handled under the Maryland Law Enforcement Officers' Bill of Rights. Leaders of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Maryland Chiefs of Police Association testified against the bill addressing misconduct, noting the legislation would limit the authority of police chiefs and sheriffs to discipline officers…
