July 18th, 2011 by WCBC Radio

Allegany County Commissioner Bill Valentine announced Thursday that both he and State Sen. George Edwards have been appointed to a Marcellus shale drilling study panel formed by Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley. Last month, all three commissioners signed off on a letter to the governor asking him to appoint Valentine and Creade Brodie Jr. to the panel. In an executive order, the governor said the committee would include members of local governments in Western Maryland, and would include a study of risks and benefits of drilling. The study will have three parts, with the task force l presenting its recommendations by the end of the year on legislation to tax drilling and establish liability standards. Recommendations on best practices for natural gas exploration and production are to be delivered by Aug. 1, 2012, and a final report, including environmental impacts of drilling, is to be issued by Aug. 1, 2014. Valentine said he is glad to see that Allegany County will have some input on an issue that could help shape the future of the regions economy in the coming years…
