Community Rallies Around ‘Lucky 33′

July 23rd, 2014 by WCBC Radio

On June 13th, 33 dogs were pulled from a hoarder/abandonment situation on Greene Street  in Cumberland. The dogs, now known as the “Lucky 33,” continue to recover at the Allegany County Animal Shelter, particularly with eye issues due to the ammonia level from urine in the house. The executive director of the animal shelter management foundation said this was probably the worst animal case ever seen in Allegany County.  The Lucky 33 ranged in age from 2 weeks to about 10 years old. The community, including business owners, has rallied around to support the shelter’s efforts with donations and fundraisers.  One of the service clubs donating to the shelter has been the Cumberland Rotary Club. Foundation President Becky McClarran thanked the club for its contribution, especially in light of the crowded situation that has developed with 33 new dogs at the shelter.
