With a shortfall estimate ranging anywhere from $2.6 to $5 million dollars- completing the budget for the planned new Allegany High School may prove challenging for the Board of Education. It’s a problem County Commissioner President Bill Valentine says could have been avoided completely. In recent weeks, Valentine has questioned the school board’s decision to construct a school that he says is 25 percent larger than the state recommended. He said the school design is for 145,422 square feet and the state recommended 115,400 square feet. Superintendent of Schools Dr David Cox acknowledged that the new school is designed larger than the minimum the state calculated, but added that no county system builds schools at the minimum. He says that the board has to consider any number of factors. The bottom line, he says, is that the school is built to offer the educational program required at Allegany at the minimum square footage…
