Members of the Allegany County Board of Education say comprehensive new security measures, in addition to hiring more armed school resource officers remain a top priority for the local system heading into the 2019 General Assembly Session. The Maryland Safe to Learn Act of 2018, passed by the General Assembly this year, makes available $40.6 million for fiscal year 2019 to increase security in schools. Officials pointed out that the measures are comprehensive and adding SROs is only one step. Although the goal won’t be met this year, the state wants to see 15 armed SROs serving the 22 public schools in Allegany County. This year, a minimum of eight will be on duty locally. BOE members would eventually like to have one SRO for each of the county’s schools.
