Construction to Fallen Wall Begins on Washington Street

Work to replace the stone wall on Washington Street that supports the grounds of Emmanuel Episcopal Church began this week and church officials are hoping for a summer holiday completion. A portion of the wall collapsed several weeks and another section has started to show signs that it could also be close to faltering. The damage has been caused by drainage problems attributed to the age of both the wall and drains. The church retained Carl Belt Construction to replace the wall- with a cost estimate of $180,000. Rector Martha Macgill says that the city of Cumberland and waived permitting fees for the project- and that grants are being sought to help defray the costs- but the church will need donations to complete the funding package…
