Correctional Officer Hiring Events in Cumberland on Weekend

August 21st, 2018 by WCBC Radio

The state will bring its recruiting blitz to Cumberland on Friday and Saturday in an effort to hire new correctional officers. Secretary Stephen Moyer will lead recruiting on Friday, August 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, August 25 from 8 a.m. to noon at Allegany College of Maryland. The events will be held in the Continuing Education Building at 12401 Willowbrook Road in Cumberland and will allow candidates to apply and test on the same day. The department held a similar push down on the Eastern Shore last month and will do the same in Hagerstown next month in an effort to reduce an officer shortage. “We will not let up on our vigorous efforts to boost our staff in this tough hiring climate,” Moyer said. “We do not just offer a job but the chance at a highly successful career.”  Correctional officers earn a starting salary of close to $40,000 a year and can rise to $54,200 before promotion. The job comes with the ability to retire after 20 years in addition to excellent health and retirement benefits. Hiring for law enforcement in many agencies around the state has proved difficult because the unemployment rate is low at 4.3 percent.

Governor Larry Hogan has approved incentives to attract new correctional officers including a $5,000 bonus for candidates who finish a year with the department, a $3,000 bonus to retain current officers, $500 for an officer who recommends a successful candidate, college debt relief and income tax breaks for correctional officer retirees.

“We have always had a wonderful relationship with the people of Allegany County and hope to enhance that by hiring more officers to be part of our correctional team,” Moyer said.

The department has made it easier to apply by allowing candidates to simply text the word HIRE to 313131 for instructions.
