The city of Cumberland will be getting some financial assistance from the Allegany County Commissioners to help move forward with the controversial Rolling Mill project. The Maryland Avenue Redevelopment Project, which calls for the acquisition and demolition of 67 homes and a church in the city’s Rolling Mill neighborhood, began by the city in late 2015. The homes are being cleared to transform the area into a commercial site with a national chain restaurant and businesses. There remain about a dozen holdouts fighting to keep their homes. As part of the county’s Community Enhancement Program, which assists municipalities with blight removal, the city of Cumberland requested and received $210,000 for the Rolling Mill project. County Commissioners President Jake Shade acknowledged that the project has its critics, but said in the larger scale it’s a solid economic development move for the region…
