County Believes Dispute With Board Is Resolved

August 7th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

While Allegany County Commissioner Bill Valentine tells WCBC News that he believes the issue with the Board of Education over the role of the board’s ex-officio position has been resolved- members of the school board have a different take. The commissioners, upset with ex-officio member Valentine being asked by the school board to leave during certain discussions that take place in executive or closed sessions, sent a letter to the board demanding that no such exclusions take place. The county provided a two week response period for the board to reply- and Valentine said he did received correspondence from board attorney Gary Hanna. Valentine interpreted the letter as a vindication of the commissioner’s position- saying that Hanna acknowledged that the ex-officio member is not prohibited by law from sitting in on those sessions and that it would be longer be an issue…

School Board members Mike Llewellyn and Sara Beth James have a vastly different take than the commissioner, saying that the letter simply states that the board would be unable to comply with the two week deadline- and that the hope remains for an amicable resolution to the issue…
