County Budget To Include Tax Reduction And Some Utility Rate Hikes

The Allegany County Commissioners expect to approve the FY 2017 budget next week- and among the highlights is another incremental tax reduction, but some utility rate hikes. This will mark the 6th consecutive year the commissioners have lowered the property tax rate, the only county in the state moving in that direction. The proposed utility rate increases include a $2 per quarter across the board sewer rate increase, or about 67 cents a month, a $3 per quarter increase to the Braddock Run sewer surcharge, and a district water rate increase of $1 to $2, or 33 to 67 cents per month.   Finance Director Jason Bennett said that without question, one of the biggest challenges in putting together the budget centered on the large costs associated with workers comp issues…
