In addition to focusing on a significant increase in crime rates in Allegany County in the past three decades, a recent Baltimore Sun article also opined that the county has never recovered from the loss of major manufacturers in the 1970’s and ‘80’s. The county director of economic development says while that’s partially true, that doesn’t mean the county hasn’t made great strides in creating jobs in other areas. Between 1981 and 1987, Allegany County lost the PPG, Celanese, and Kelly Springfield plants- and literally thousands of jobs went with them.
