County Receives Good News/Bad News Report At Budget Work Session

May 18th, 2012 by WCBC Radio

Meeting for a budget work session for the first time since the state of Maryland wrapped up a three day special budget session- the Allegany County Commissioners received a good news bad news report from Finance Director Jason Bennett. While the budget approved this week is better for the county compared to the “doomsday” budget that had been in place- it also includes the county picking up the cost of teacher pensions over the next four years. A disparity grant will cover the cost in year one, but no one is confident those grants will be there in the coming years when the cost of the pension grows to more than $2 million annually. Bennett says that avoiding the doomsday budget however means the county won’t be forced to make any additional personnel cuts this year…
