County Updates Tattoo Regulations

The Allegany County Commissioners were briefed last week on a long anticipated update to the county’s tattoo regulations.  The current regulations haven’t been amended since 1991, long before the industry expanded to include body piercings, scarification — which uses cutting and the scars that develop — to create images and dermal implants in the skin. Brian Dicken and Misty Joy with the Allegany County Health Department presented the update during the county’s public work session with Dicken saying that the goal was simply to shore up some things that were lacking. Among the updates, those under the age of 18 will need written consent from a parent or legal guardian to obtain a tattoo or piercing; and tattooing or piercing in a private home or unlicensed facility will be illegal. He said that while most the local operations are legitimate and following regulations, there will be a stronger effort to make sure that every business is in compliance…
