Cox Stands by Common Core Reform

It's drawing a lot of fire, but Allegany County Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Cox said he wouldn’t move away from Common Core if given the chance. As Maryland moves ahead with school reform and the implementation of the Common Core State Standards, state officials are facing growing resistance among teachers, lawmakers and others who are concerned that too much change is being forced onto schools too soon. The issue in Maryland has gotten to the point where it is becoming a political issue.  Next month,  with the start of the 2014  legislative session, House Republicans plan to push for the state to withdraw from the Common Core initiative; or at least provide counties with the opportunity to opt out of the controversial program. Cox tells WCBC News that while it has been an extremely challenging change to implement- he believes it works in the best interest of the school system and the students in the longrun…
