CSX and City Face Off Over Washington Street Bridge

The CSX owned Washington Street Bridge has been closed to vehicular traffic since August 17- and will remain closed for an undetermined period of time while CSX repairs or replaces the structure. The issue was discussed during Tuesday’s meeting of the Cumberland Mayor and City Council with Administrator Jeff Rhodes informing the council that CSX has asked if the city would have interest in taking ownership of the bridge. If the city chose that option, it would facilitate federal funding to adequately repair or replace the bridge. However he notes that there are no guarentees of receiving federal funding anytime soon- and the money would be filtered through the county, which may have more important bridge projects targeted. The council members expressed no interest in taking control of the bridge. Mayor Brian Grim said he doesn’t think the city is in position take on yet another infrastructure project. Councilman Harold “Butch” Hendershot was even more adamant, calling the situation a case of negligence on the part of CSX…
