CSX Updates Hyndman Recovery

August 7th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

Following is an updated statement from CSX Spokesperson Rob Doolittle:

CSX continues to make progress in restoring the site of the derailment that occurred in Hyndman, Penn., on Aug. 2.

At noon Saturday, Aug. 5, the vast majority of residents who had been evacuated from Hyndman for safety reasons were allowed to return to their homes. A reduced evacuation area that affects approximately 30 residences is being maintained due to the ongoing truck traffic, movement of derailed cars and other noisy, disruptive activity that is occurring at the scene of the derailment.

Today, CSX will continue to receive residents at a community outreach center at the Hope for Hyndman Charter School, 130 School Drive, Hyndman, to assist in meeting their requirements and reimbursing residents for costs incurred during the event. The center will remain open until 8 p.m.

On Tuesday, Aug. 8, the CSX community outreach center will relocate to the Hyndman General Store and Quilt Shop, 141 Market Street in Hyndman. CSX representatives will be available between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily until Friday, Aug. 11.

Additional information about ways to contact CSX and the status of the restoration effort are available online at response.csx.com.

At the site of the derailment, efforts continue to remove the remaining 20 rail cars and clean up grain products that were spilled during the event. Among those cars are two carloads of propane and several carloads of molten sulfur and asphalt. Those products will be transferred to trucks for transportation offsite and the cars will be cleaned and purged prior to removal. As part of the process of purging the propane cars, residents may see flames on Tuesday and Wednesday evening; those flames are a normal part of the process of cleaning the cars, as the last remaining vapors in the tanks are flared-off following transfer of the liquid product to trucks. These processes are being closely coordinated with and approved by the Hyndman Volunteer Fire Department, and all necessary precautions will be taken to manage the process safely.
