Cumberland Groundhog Day Celebration

February 2nd, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Western Maryland Murray will emerge early today- Saturday at the 12th annual Groundhog Day celebration at City Hall.  The event will be hosted by Mayor Ray Morriss with Bob Candy of the Tri-State Zoological Park bringing Murray to the event. Murray will appear at sunrise, which will be 7:22 a.m. Hot beverages and snack foods will be supplied inside City Hall. A Pennsylvania Dutch tradition, the superstition of the groundhog dates back to the mid-1800s. The story is that if the groundhog peeps out from his burrow and sees his shadow and retreats, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If the groundhog does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring.
