Cumberland Police Advising Businesses of Scam

February 29th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Police Department would like to make businesses aware of a possible scam occurring in the area.

It has been reported that businesses are receiving calls from individuals who state they are working for the City of Cumberland Utilities Department. The caller advises that the business is late on their payment and the utilities will be turned off. The caller then requests bank account information be provided to them along with routing numbers.

The Cumberland Police are urging businesses not to provide personal information or bank statement information over the phone. Most, if not all government agencies, will correspond with you by mail and provide you phone numbers to call to verify the legitimacy of the letter. Do not release personal information to anyone without verifying who they are.
