June 16th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

On Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at approximately 9:10 p.m., the Cumberland Police Department received a call from a citizen about a drug deal taking place on Charles Street.  The caller provided a description of the vehicle and advised they could hear two men arguing over the price of heroin.  The officer responded and located the vehicle with the driver sitting inside.  The officer walked up to the vehicle and shined his light into it.  He immediately observed the driver holding a clear plastic baggie with numerous capsules of different colors inside.  The driver then attempted to conceal the baggie under his leg.  The officer ordered the driver to turn off the vehicle and step out, at which time the driver refused to do so.  The driver was asked again to step out at which time he started to reach under the front seat.  The officer, fearing the driver was reaching for a weapon, opened the unlocked door and pulled him from the vehicle.  The driver pushed the officer, broke free from his grip and took off running on foot.  The officer gave chase, ordering the individual to stop.  The officer then observed the individual reaching into his waistband as he continued running at which time the officer deployed his taser.  The individual fell to the ground, striking his head on the sidewalk.  The officer called for an ambulance and secured the scene.  Nineteen capsules of suspected heroin, with a street value of approximately $1,500.00, was found in the individual’s right hand.  A small amount of marijuana was located in the vehicle once it was searched.  The individual was transported to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.   A warrant for the individual’s arrest is on file and will be served upon his release from the facility for several CDS-related charges to include CDS possession with intent to distribute and resisting arrest.  The individual was identified as Rodricus Marquees Wilkes, age 26, Altamont Terrace, Cumberland, Maryland.
