Cumberland Postal Sorting Facility To Close

The United State Postal Service has come to the decision to close the Cumberland Sorting Facility which will eliminate 30 local jobs. Cumberland mail processing will be moved to Johnstown, Pennsylvannia's Processing and Distributing Facility.

According to a press release from the postal service "There will be no change to the Retail Unit or Business Mail Entry Unit at the Cumberland, Md., Customer Service Mail Processing Center location at this time.

The decision to close the Cumberland facility as well as dozens of other processing centers comes from what the Postal Service is calling a "financial crisis". The United States Postal Service has experienced a 25-percent decline in First-Class Mail volume since the year 2006, and does not receive tax dollars for its operations and relies only on the sale of postage, postal products and services. $2,159,374 is expected to be saved be saved by eliminating operations at the Cumberland facility and also by eliminating the 30 positions.
