After raising sewer rates 20 percent last year, Cumberland City officials have announced another 20 percent increase would be added this year- and the fact that many county residents will have their bills impacted is a point of consternation for the Allegany County Commissioners. Both Commissioners Creade Brodie Jr. and Mike McKay at least hinted that contacting the Maryland Public Service Commission to review the city’s proposed rate hike could be an option. At a recent city council work session, it was noted that the average combined bill for water, sewer, garbage collection and Chesapeake Bay fee is around $78, according to Urban. The 20 percent increase for 2015 is expected to add about $7 to that bill. With many county resident served by the city water supply- they do will be hit with a rate hike.
