January 6th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

The Allegany County Commissioners  recognized Judith Lee Snyder of Cumberland at their public business meeting on January 5. Known as Judy, Snyder was inducted into the 2016 Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame, Inc. in October. She was honored with other individuals who represented all counties and Baltimore City. The honorees were inducted during a ceremony and luncheon at Michael’s Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, Maryland. The award criteria included past and present community contributions. A nominee is to be 65 years of age or older, a resident of Maryland, and an active volunteer at the time of nomination. Indeed, this honor is justifiably deserved, as recognized by the Allegany County Commissioners.  Snyder was nominated for the Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame by two Allegany County Retired School Personnel Association members, Bonnie Troxell and Valerie Westfall. Snyder had an exceptional year. She was also nominated by Troxell and Westfall and received the 2016 Maryland Retired School Personnel Association Honorary Mention Individual Community Service Award.

Snyder’s Hall of Fame sponsors were Edward P. Mullaney, former Downtown Cumberland Mall Manager with the Maryland Main Street Program and retired Montgomery County Public School System teacher, and Brian P. Westfall, Allegany County Director of Human Resources. Mullaney emphasized: “I have witnessed first-hand the many contributions Judy has made to her community. Her unending energy and her positive spirit have been infectious to everyone she comes in contact with. . .  and she knows everyone! … If it is the goal of one generation to pass onto the next generation the love of community, the spirit of doing for others, and of being a positive role model, then Judy Snyder is at the head of her call with a grade of A+.” Westfall summarized his admiration for her: “Judy is a dedicated volunteer, a motivational leader, and a wonderful cheerleader for any activity in which she is involved.”
