The Office of the State’s Attorney for Allegany County, Michael O. Twigg, State’s Attorney, announced on Monday, August 20, 2018, that Leigh Danielle Williams, 37 of Cumberland, was sentenced in the Allegany County Circuit Court by the Honorable Judge W. Timothy Finan to 25 years, with 5 years suspended, in the Maryland Department of Corrections for the October 27, 2017 attempted abduction of a five year old child in an alley behind West First Street.  Williams was convicted following a jury trial in June of attempted kidnapping and second degree assault.

On October 27, 2017, police were called to the area of West First Street in Cumberland for the report of an attempted kidnapping.  Witnesses testified that they heard a child screaming and saw Williams dragging the child towards a car.  An eye witness intervened and the child managed to get away.  Other individuals detained Williams until police arrived. 

Prosecuting the case for the State was Assistant State’s Attorney, Karen Detrick, who said, “This is one of those cases that shakes a community.  Without the intervention of the Good Samaritan, the outcome might have been drastically different.  Thankfully, the young child was able to escape to safety.”

The case was investigated by the C3I Unit and Cumberland City Police Department.  Also assisting in the prosecution for the State was Assistant State’s Attorney Samuel Lane.  Williams was represented by Michael Stankan and Paul Notarianni of the Public Defender’s Office.
