Dapper Dan Awards Set For Next Weekend

February 20th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Lexi McMillan will be honored as The Children’s League Child of the Year at the 68th Annual Dapper Dan Awards Banquet on Feb. 28 at the Ali Ghan Shrine Club.

McMillan is 11 years old and resides in Hyndman, Pa., with her parents, an older brother and sister, and a twin sister. She is in sixth grade at the HOPE for Hyndman Charter School. "Lexi is an excellent and talented student," teacher Brittany Smith said. "She is on our honor’s list. She always strives to do her best and is always willing to lend a hand. I mostly find her reading a good book or coloring with her friends. I am thankful to have her as my student.”

McMillan has received physical therapy through her school and The Children’s League to help improve the position and strength in her left hand and leg. Through the course of treating her with bracing, splinting and therapy it was decided that she would benefit from surgery for her left thumb and palm asymmetry. In June 2015, Dr. John Tis, pediatric orthopedist with The Children’s League, performed surgery to improve the alignment and use of her left hand.

Even though she lives with a left spastic hemiplegia, it has not and will not keep her from being active and happy. McMillan has always been determined to accomplish challenging physical tasks and she strives to be an independent young lady. She has played and enjoys soccer but her favorite pastime other than school is being with her family and playing electronic games.

The 67th Annual Dapper Dan Awards Banquet will begin at 4 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Sports Shoppe, 301-722-5490. For information on The Children’s League, call 301-759-5200.
