DARE Troopes on Duty in Outlying Schools

After a week of training to learn to teach the drug awareness program known as DARE, three fully trained former Maryland state troopers are now on duty within Allegany County’s  outlying schools- part of a new, enhanced school security program.  It was following the December 2012 Sandy Hook School shooting tragedy in Newtown, Conn. that saw  20 students and six staff members killed by a lone gunman that initiated school systems across the nation to re-evaluiate their security systems- and in Allegany County those talks got underway in earnest shortly after the start of the new year. The new plan, developed by a committee headed by Sheriff Craig Robertson, included a combination of increased monitoring and access equipment for school entry ways; armed officers; and additional mental health services for students.  An update on the new program was presented during Tuesday’s meeting of the Allegany County Board of Education. Superintendent David Cox said the new officers have been in the schools for a little more than a week…
