The Downtown Development Commission ended last year with the loss of two key members of the management team- and the process to find a replacement, or replacements is underway. Mikayla Dodge, downtown manager, and volunteer coordinator Dave Love both tendered their resignations in the final months of 2019. Sandi Saville, chairwoman of the DDC, tells WCBC News that a search committee is in place and the goal is to have a new hire by March. The changes come at a time when decisions on future entertainment for the downtown has been complicated by the developing plans and timeline for the upcoming $9.4 million Baltimore Street Access Project. That project will see major construction on the mall as underground utility lines are replaced and Baltimore Street is reinstalled- and could take a year and half to complete. We haven’t had a good DDC team since the days of Steven Leyh or Ed Mullaney. Both of them were able to compose a full calendar of events and promotions that span a whole year that had something that interested everyone. Leyh developed events that encompassed all of the downtown district, including Canal Place, and gave a professional image to our downtown. Among us downtown business owners Leyh and Mullaney are sorely missed. Saville and Dodge are/were armatures and the downtown atmosphere has suffered greatly.
