Debate on Tax Differential Surfaces Again

It’s a debate that seems to pop up every few years: an effort to change the tax differential. That rate is essentially a break provided to city residents to help offset duplicative services also provided by Allegany County. The city of Cumberland and Allegany County have engaged in some contentious discussions on the issue over the decades- and many years ago it ended up in court resulting in a court ordered formula being established. During a special work session of the city council last week, Councilman David Kauffman suggested it might be time to revisit the matter. Councilman Harold “Butch” Hendershot- the longest serving member of council and the only current member who served at the time of the court case- said it would be difficult to challenge that ruling.
