Debate on Hiring of School Safety Coordinator

One of the most recent disputes among members of the Allegany County Board of Education centered on whether the elected board or superintendent should have the power to hire a school safety coordinator. That debate took center stage during the most recent board meeting held at Washington Middle School with member Debra Frank blasting fellow board members Robert Farrell, David Bohn and Wayne Foote for trying to change the current policy- allowing the board to take control of the hiring process. Rumors have circulated that the majority board wants the position to be filled by retired state trooper and one time candidate for sheriff Jason Merritt. Frank said it is obvious to her that the three members- particularly Farrell- are clearly making a power play to suit a fairly transparent agenda.
