Decision on Downtown Mall Ultimately Lands on City Council

March 22nd, 2016 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council will have the ultimate say on what plan is implemented for downtown Cumberland’s pedestrian mall- however until a decision  is made, as much public input as possible is being sought. A number of concepts which include re-opening the mall to vehicular traffic and parking are on the table, developed by the Sage Policy Group- whose services were retained by the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation.  Bricked over since 1977, many believe the pedestrian mall has not had a desired effect on business- however others maintain that the pedestrian mall provides a scenic attraction showcasing the city’s historic downtown to tourists. Jonathan Hutcherson is chairman of the board for the CEDC.
