The Cumberland Mayor and City Council will have the ultimate say on what plan is implemented for downtown Cumberland’s pedestrian mall- however until a decision is made, as much public input as possible is being sought. A number of concepts which include re-opening the mall to vehicular traffic and parking are on the table, developed by the Sage Policy Group- whose services were retained by the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation. Bricked over since 1977, many believe the pedestrian mall has not had a desired effect on business- however others maintain that the pedestrian mall provides a scenic attraction showcasing the city’s historic downtown to tourists.
