Decision on Proposed Bike Lane Could Be Announced Tonight

March 17th, 2015 by WCBC Radio

A final decision on a proposed Frederick Street bicycle lane could be announced during tonight's meeting of the Cumberland Mayor and City Council as the subject is listed on the agenda for discussion. At the council meeting two weeks ago, Mayor Brian Grim said a petition with more than 200 signatures opposing the addition of a bicycle lane on Frederick Street has never been produced and he expected a  final decision on the proposed route in the near future.  Known as the Bedford/Frederick Street Bikeway, the plan would place a 5- to 6-foot-wide bike lane on Frederick Street beside the parking lane on the right side of the road. While there has been strong support expressed for such a project, the decision to add the bike lane has been a point of contention for many residents of the neighborhood who have voiced their opposition.  It is not known whether or not the council will act on a proposal from Councilman David Kauffman to close a lane of traffic on Frederick Street for one week to see the effect it would have on traffic flow…
