Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine told a gathering of urban leaders in Baltimore on Thursday that a Hillary Clinton administration would focus on the deep social and economic challenges that confront the nation's cities.
Speaking on criminal justice reform in a city that has wrestled with the issue for years, Kaine — a former mayor of Richmond — argued for more police training, data collection and community policing rather than "adversarial, zero tolerance" strategies.
"I am an unabashed believer in the power of our cities," Kaine, told the National Urban League conference. "Our cities will find a partner in a Clinton-Kaine administration.
Kaine, Virginia's junior senator, focused on the Clinton campaign's jobs proposal, but also touched on criminal justice, minority-owned businesses and early education. He called for revamping the criminal justice system, and said that too many African American families were mourning the loss of a family member killed in police custody.
