The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services will hold a special Cumberland hiring event this Saturday and Sunday, May 4th and 5th, to recruit employees being unemployed by a nearby mill closing to be correctional officers.
The department is seeking to fill correctional officer ranks at it five Cumberland and Hagerstown facilities, which already employ hundreds of Cumberland area workers.
The department sees the event as a win for the agency and a good opportunity for the mill workers and anyone else looking for a job.
“They need good jobs and we need good employees,” Acting Secretary Michael Zeigler said. “We’ve had a longstanding partnership with the Cumberland region and know from the staff at our facilities that the area is stocked with exceptional workers.”
The event will be held at the administration building of the Western Correctional Institution at 13800 McMullen Highway SW in Cumberland on Saturday, May 4th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, May 5th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Correctional officers start at a salary of close to $40,000 a year. The department also offers a 20-year retirement. Gov. Larry Hogan recently added further incentives such as a $5,000 hiring bonus and retention pay while exempting part of correctional officer retirement pay from state income tax.

Any employment for an unemployed individual is better than being unemployed. The sad issue is that all the knowledge and skills that the VERSO ex-employees will be lost. Guarding prisoners is a brain buster and menial skill set. Why can’t we as a local entity create something to replace the deserting VERSO CORPORATION.Put on your thinking caps and let’s brainstorm this calamity to our benefit. Forever Allegany.

We need to do everything we can to support Northrop Grumman and other businesses that want to move to West Virginia or Pennsylvania when the state doesn’t try to micromanage your business for you

I think the terms ‘brain buster’ and menial skill set’ are VERY offensive to all the Correctional Officers. My husband retired from the prison system and he had to be on mental high alert daily to be safe and keep his fellow officers safe. Correctional officers are a special breed. It is a well-paid job with great benefits.
