Derailment may have been caused by recent change in CSX operations

May 26th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

According to a source close to the situation, this weeks train derailment may have been the result of the recent decision by CSX to discontinue the Hump. Canal Parkway was closed from 8:30 Wednesday night til noon on Thursday after two train cars derailed. CSX spokesman Rob Doolittle said the incident occurred when two freight cars were being moved to assemble to another train. A person with knowledge of the accident and CSX operations in South Cumberland said it was a case of the rail yard not having the capability of flat switching. Instead when one car pushed another too hard, it buckled causing the derailment. The source said unless some changes are made, such incidents are likely to occur again. A spokesman for CSX was not immediately available for comment.
