Difonzo Updates Downtown Water Valve Replacement Work

The City of Cumberland will begin the next phase of water valve replacements downtown on Monday resulting in a temporary loss of water in some sections of downtown and forcing the closure of the Mechanic and Baltimore streets intersection to motorists. The city has found a way to temporarily feed water to some downtown areas avoiding a loss of service. However, other areas will be without water Monday and Tuesday. City officials had originally intended to do the repair work on a weekend. However, project managers realized that parts and specialized help, if needed, would be difficult to obtain on a weekend. John DiFonzo, city engineer, discussed the situation at Tuesday's City Council meeting. He said the good news is that most homes and businesses will not be without water during the repairs…
