DNR Slates Free Class For Trappers

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is offering a free class for anyone wanting to trap furbearers in the state.

The class will take place Sept. 16, at Casselman Valley Sportsman’s Club in Grantsville. Pre-registration is required.

Furbearers that can be trapped in Maryland include: beaver, coyote, fisher, gray fox, long-tailed weasel, mink, muskrat, nutria, opossum, raccoon, red fox, river otter and skunk. All trappers must possess a Furbearer Permitand Certificate of Trapper Education.

Course participants must complete a Maryland Trapper Education Workbook before Sept. 16. The workbook is are available online or at regional Wildlife and Heritage Service offices.

In order to pass the Trapper Education Course and obtain certification, participants must:

  • Bring a completed Maryland Trapper Education Workbook to class;
  • Participate in trap handling/field exercises; and
  • Pass a written test of 50 questions with a score of at least 70 percent.

Participants under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Any participant who has any difficulty with reading, testing or any other aspect of the course may request accommodations. Participants can bring lunch or purchase one for $5.
