Domestic Violence Legislation

The Maryland Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee this week listened to testimony on a bill that would allow judges to add five years to the prison sentence of anyone convicted of a domestic violence related crime, if the crime was witnessed by a child between the ages of two and 18. The bill is backed by Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler, who has made the issue his top legislative priority of the year. Gansler says that there is evidence that children who witness abuse often become abusers themselves when they become adults.
