Dr. David Cox Finalist For Job In Tennessee

May 2nd, 2019 by WCBC Radio

This time next week the Allegany County Board of Education should know whether or not it will need to conduct a search for a new superintendent. On Wednesday afternoon it was revealed that Superintendent David Cox is a finalist for a position as director of public schools in Sullivan County, Tennessee. The Sullivan school board announced Cox, Corey Gardenhour of Elizabethton City Schools and Patrick Fraley of Greeneville City Schools as finalists for the director job. Interviews will be conducted next Tuesday and the Sullivan School Board is expected to announce its decision the following day. In an interview with WCBC News, Cox noted that this was not a job he applied for as he was essentially recruited as a candidate by Wayne Qualls who conducts searches for administrators.  Cox is a native of Tennessee and an opportunity to head a school system there certainly holds some appeal…

For the well-being of the children of the ACPS, many of us hope that his departure will happen. Tennessee’s loss will be our gain. The BOE should move quickly to bring Dr. Larry J. Smith to the ACPS as Superintendent. A man of great integrity, he is a local born educational leader who will fight day in and day out for children and families. We need a leader who will remove the vestiges of a “good old boy” system and put kids first. He will make sure that bridges are restored between the BOE, the Commissioners, state legislators and businesses. He will make sure integrity and advocacy for all children will be constant. He will fix the bullying problem in our schools by making sure principals and teachers hold bullies accountable. He designed and implemented a school safety plan as an administrator before Columbine. I know, my kid was there. With grandkids here and the wife and I back in the county-we need to try to get Dr. Larry Smith here. I heard him speak a few weeks ago when he got the distinguished alumni award. Man, he has a genuine heart for kids and will fight for them to get a world class education.
