Eastern Panhandle Drug Crisis Grows

More than 100 overdose deaths were reported last year in the Eastern Panhandle, with 79 of them occurring in Berkeley County, according to data compiled this month by the West Virginia Health Statistics Center. The Herald Mail reports there were 23 overdose deaths in Jefferson County and four in Morgan County last year, and all but two involved at least one opioid, such as heroin, according to a state analysis completed Jan. 12. The cumulative figures show that at least 73 of the overdose deaths in Berkeley County involved at least one opioid, according to the health statistics center, which is an arm of the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
