Edwards Responds to Lifting Blue Laws in County

In public session last week, the Allegany County Commissioners requested state lawmakers to amend a number of local liquor laws, including those that ban Sunday alcohol sales, during the 2016 General Assembly session. Allegany is among few counties in Maryland under a blue law, which prohibits package store sales of alcohol on Sundays. The Commissioners are also asking lawmakers to seek an earlier serving time at local restaurants. Currently, Allegany County restaurants aren't allowed to serve alcohol before 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Commissioners are requesting  that time change to 11 a.m. Additionally, commissioners will request the age limit for workers who serve spirits to be 18. Currently, employees 18 to 20 years old may only serve beer and wine. State Senator George Edwards suggested the commissioners solicit input from the local liquor board and to then make a formal written request to the delegation…
