Effort to halt non police employees from handling gun applications

September 19th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

A number of gun owners rights groups, and an unnamed Anne Arundel County resident are seeking a temporary restraining order to stop the State Police from using employees from other state agencies to help process gun license applications. Last month, the Maryland State Police used employees from other agencies to enter license application information into a state data base, so that troopers could perform criminal background checks on applicants. It was an attempt to clear a backlog of 38,000 applications. A number of lawmakers had criticized the practice, noting it does not protect the privacy of applicant's personal information.
