Efforts To Upgrade George St. Parking Garage Moving Forward

August 12th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Efforts to spruce up and upgrade the George Street Parking Garage are finally moving forward.  Although centrally located in the business district downtown- the garage is drastically underutilized. Under the proposed plan, the gates on George Street would become two entrances: one primarily for handicapped and reserved parking, and the second for upper level access. The top level would be reserved for overnight parking. The gate on Union Street would become a dedicated exit. Located at the corner of South George and West Union streets, the 338-space, six-level garage was built in 1975. City officials have been seeking a way to entice motorists to frequent the under-utilized facility. Sandi Saville, chair of the Downtown Development Commission, provided an update during the regular DDC monthly meeting. One negative could be the elimination of free parking under the bridge across from Atlantic Broadband on Mechanic Street…

In order to lure people downtown there should be some emphasis placed on free parking for visitors. Losing what little there is is not the way to go.
The only parking for Canal Place is the postage stamp sized pay lot especially when the under bridge parking is done away with.
The Times News prints that downtown should cater to visitors and then chains off their lot, even after 5PM and all week ends.
Does any one remember the phrase; plenty of free parking ? That should be the rule rather than the exception.
