Emergency Services Shuts Down McCoole VFD

April 19th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

With a growing fiscal crisis that has no end in sight, Allegany County Emergency Services has essentially shutdown the McCoole Volunteer Fire Department. The announcement made by Emergency Services Director Dick Devore during a Thursday afternoon work session of the County Commissioners. Devore said that in recent years, having seen its once highly profitable bingo operation fade away, the McCoole department has experienced a series of financial setbacks and is approaching backruptcy. The fire house is in foreclosure; the insurance has lapsed on its vehicle fleet; just four responders remain; and debt exceeds $900,000. All of those problems gave the Emergency Services Board little recourse but to remove McCoole from the communication service center.
