Express Slots Open

April 22nd, 2016 by WCBC Radio

There are still a few mentor and community coordinator slots open in Mineral County with the Energy Express program. College students and community members can participate in the eight-week AmeriCorps summer reading program. Since its inception in 1994, children participating in Energy Express have increased or maintained their reading skills over the summer and have received 58 percent of their daily nutritional requirements.

AmeriCorps members serving as mentors and community coordinators must be available from June 16 through Aug. 5 and be at least 18 years old by June 16. Mentors must be a college-bound high school senior, a current college student or a recent college graduate.

In return for their 300 hours of service, Energy Express AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance, and an educational award to pay for college tuition or loans. Individuals 55 years of age or older may transfer their Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards to their children, grandchildren and foster children.

The Energy Express AmeriCorps program is under the leadership of the West Virginia University Extension Service 4-H Youth Development, and is funded in part by grants from the West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts and Volunteer West Virginia. The local Community Trust Foundation and United Way help support the Mineral County program.
