Facilities Director Vince Montana has recommended that the Allegany County Board of Education split the new Allegany High School project — expected to cost around $39 million altogether — into two phases, requesting $3 million for Phase I, or site preparation, on the 2013 CIP. Site preparation includes demolition, relocating utilities and constructing a storm water management system. Plans are to build a new school at the site of the former Braddock campus of Western Maryland Health System, which is transferring the property to the BOE as part of a land swap with the city of Cumberland. The city gave WMHS around 40 acres of land near Constitution Park as part of the deal. A key to this project coming to fruition to the unprecedented 93-7 funding split with the state- however that formula will be in place for just a few more years.
