Fatal Crash on Rt. 144

On 08/17/2012 at approximately 8:16 pm  deputies of the Allegany County Sheriff's Office responded to National Pike in Flintstone in the area of Billie's Gas and Grub for a  motor vehicle crash.

Deputies arrived on scene and based upon preliminary investigation determined that a 1997 Saturn car being driven by 26 year old Daniel Weaver of Fort Ashby WV. failed to yield the right of way while exiting a parking lot onto National Pike. A 1986 GMC Truck being operated by 26 year old Melvin Emory James Gallion of Flintstone MD. was traveling E/B on National Pike and struck Weaver's vehicle. Weaver and two passengers were transported by ambulance to WMRMC. Weaver succumbed to injuries received from the impact and was pronounced dead at the hospital. A 25 year old male and a 27 year old female, who were passengers in Weaver's vehicle, were released after being treated for non-serious injuries.

Gallion was treated for non-serious injuries at WMRMC and subsequently charged for DUI/DWI and driving on a suspended license. He was held on a $5,000.00 bond at the Allegany county Detention Center.

A Crash Reconstructionist from the Allegany County Sheriff's Office and the Maryland State Police assisted in the investigation. Rt. 144 was closed for approximately 3 hours. The investigation is continuing and additional charges are pending.

Flintstone Fire Department and Ambulance, Orleans Fire Department, Cumberland City Fire Department Ambulance, Trooper 5 and Maryland State Police assisted in the incident.
