Fatal Fall From Lover’s Leap

On Thursday,shortly after 11:00 AM, the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a subject falling from the cliffs known as “Lover’s Leap”, in the vicinity of the “Narrows”, above Will’s Creek. When Deputies arrived they observed a body at the base of the cliff.  The Maryland State Police Medevac helicopter, “Trooper 5”, responded to the scene. Rescue personnel were lowered by helicopter to the body. After checking for vital signs, it was determined that the victim was deceased.  The Allegany County High Angle Rescue Team, comprised of members from the Cumberland Fire Department, Maryland Natural Resources Police, LaVale Volunteer Fire Department, and Bowling Green Volunteer Fire Department, responded to the scene to recover the body. Members had to rappel down the cliff to the body and use a rescue basket to bring the body back up to the top of the cliff.  The body will be transported to the Maryland State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.  Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) also responded to the scene to assist in the investigation.              The victim has been identified as 34 year old Thaddeus Terrance Carolan of Cumberland.   At this point, Investigators believe the fall was accidental and don’t suspect foul play. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death is continuing by the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and C3I.
