Fatal Vehicle Accident On I-70 West

The Maryland State Police are investigating a two vehicle collision that resulted in a single fatality.

On 3/23/2014 at approximately 2030 hours, Troopers along with Pennsylvania State Police, Hancock Police Department, Hancock Volunteer Fire Department and EMS companies, responded to E/B I 70 west of the 1 mile marker for a motor vehicle collision.

The initial investigation revealed that 50 year old Larry Allen Martz of Mayport, PA was driving his 1996 Pontiac Bonneville westbound on I 70 in the eastbound lanes. Martz collided head on with a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 27 year old Brian Christopher Chatfield from Silver City, NC. The front seat passenger in the Chevrolet was 44 year old Clarence Hobbs from Newark, DE and the left rear passenger was 25 year old Joshua Theodore Walls from Baltimore, MD. Martz was flown by MSP Trooper 3 to Meritus Medical Center and was later pronounced dead there. All occupants in the Chevrolet were treated at the scene and released.  

The initial investigation is being conducted by TFC Schmidt of the Hagerstown Barrack.  The Interstate was closed for approximately 3 hours, reopening at 11:15pm.
