Fire Marshal of Year Awarded

Deputy State Fire Marshal William Potts assigned to the Office of the State Fire Marshal Bomb Squad, has been named the recipient of the coveted, “2012 Deputy State Fire Marshal of the Year” award.  State Fire Marshal William E. Barnard made the presentation during a ceremony at the Maryland State Firemen’s Association annual convention in Ocean City on June 17, 2013.

Deputy Potts was nominated by his supervisor, Deputy Chief State Fire Marshal Jack Waldner.  William was cited for his many achievements in 2012, such as; Tackling the technical requirements needed to execute a plan for Maritime Tactical Operations, Conducted an exhaustive search for proper equipment used for underwater explosives response, Tested equipment for functionality and reliability, Successfully completed two dive instructor accreditations in order to train other bomb squad divers, and Developed and implemented necessary training requirements for bomb squad dive candidates.  The procedures developed during this process have effectively qualified Deputy Potts to assist with a nationwide training program involving the few public service agencies in the country that perform underwater explosives response.  All of these tasks were accomplished while maintaining his normal workload as an on-call Bomb Squad Technician.

Deputy Potts began his career with the Office of the State Fire Marshal as a Bomb Squad Technician in October 2007 after a distinguished career as a bomb technician with the Metro Transit Police in Washington D.C.  Since joining the Office of the State Fire Marshal he has proven himself to be a dedicated and well respected addition to the agency.
